Summer Events: A Look Ahead

As the 2023-2024 school year comes to a close, WISH Academy students have numerous summer events and activities to look forward to.

Summer events are often a great way to gain service hours while reconnecting with friends. Students of all ages can look forward to WISH’s annual Fourth of July parade float. Students will have the opportunity to walk next to, on, or behind the float as it moves through the Westchester Fourth of July Parade around 11 am to 12 pm. The parade is put on by the LAX / Coastal Chamber of Commerce and takes place on Manchester Avenue and Loyola Boulevard, starting near Westchester Park and ending on the Loyola Marymount University campus. On a day (to be announced) shortly before the parade, the school will offer a volunteer opportunity for students to help decorate the WISH float. Both the float decoration and the parade will count towards participating students’ service hours in the next school year.

Another great way to gain service hours while supporting WISH over the summer is campus beautification. The separate indoor and outdoor beautification events are an opportunity for students to help create a welcoming environment for the start of the new year. Students will clean up the campus, put up decorations, help teachers unpack their classrooms, and many more essential tasks to prepare for the start of the semester. Outdoor beautification, focusing on tasks such as trash pickup and replanting the plants in the planters, will be on July 11th from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, and indoor beautification, focusing on decorating classrooms and getting the campus organized, will be on August 7th from 10 am-1 pm.

For those looking to reconnect with their friends over summer break, WISH is holding an Ice Skating Social at the Toyota Sports Performance Center in El Segundo from 7:30pm–9:30pm. Ticket prices may vary but are usually around $25. Warm clothes and a helmet are recommended to be most prepared and comfortable during the day.

For rising seniors, summer break provides a time to get started on college applications. A college application workshop will be held from 10 am to noon each day from Monday, June 24th through Friday, June 28th to support incoming seniors during what can be a stressful time. The workshop will go over topics such as creating a college list and tackling the college essay questions. The link to sign up will be sent to all students in the WISH Wise Weekly email shortly.

All students planning on participating in any 2024/2025 sports are heavily encouraged to attend one or both weeks of summer sports training on campus. Sign ups for the Summer Sports Training Program are included in the Athlete Participation Form found in the WISH Wise Weekly, which is required to sign up for any 2024/2045 sport along with the Preparticipation Physical Evaluation Form. The first week is Monday, July 29th through Thursday, August 1st, and the second week is Monday, August 5th, through Thursday, August 8th, with training both weeks lasting from 9 am to noon.

Fall sports will hold their tryouts during the Summer Sports Training Program as well. These sports include Cross Country, Girls Flag Football, and Girls Junior Varsity/Varsity Volleyball Teams. The tryouts will be held at WISH Academy High School from 9am to 12pm. To participate in WISH Academy sports, students must fulfill all of the registration requirements. More information on WISH Academy 2024/2025 sports will come out shortly.

During the end of summer, WISH welcomes back all students on the morning of August 9th with orientation, where students will receive their schedules, school-issued devices, and more information about the coming year. Directly after orientation, LINK leaders will hold LINK Day from 11 am to 12 pm to welcome incoming 9th grade students. The day gives LINK leaders the opportunity to meet their freshman groups, play games, and give them tours around campus to welcome them to WISH Academy High School.

Students return to school on Monday, August 12th. Until then, The Aviary wishes everyone a spectacular summer filled with happy memories with friends and family. Goodbye to the 2024 graduating class and good luck in all future endeavors, in school and out.
